Here at MCDC we have been spotting talented graduates at degree shows since 2011. By promoting and celebrating their work we hope to help them establish their place in the world of contemporary craft and design. We also present one outstanding MMU graduate with an Annual MMU Graduate Solo Exhibition Award, and give them the opportunity to exhibit their work here at MCDC. This year’s finest are incredibly talented, diverse makers who range in style with a variety of different practices, from printed fabrics and wallpaper designs, innovative sustainable design and even some furry jewellery…
At the University of Bolton graduate show we spotted two brilliant printed fabric and wallpaper designers, Sophie Tattersall and Malaka Mulongo, both Textiles and Surface Design graduates.
Sophie creates vibrant printed textiles for fashion and interiors, by creating designs inspired by nature, particularly repeating flower and feather motifs that are used to create lively, geometric prints. For her degree show she produced a collection of printed fabric samples, scarfs, wallpaper designs and cushions.
Malaka’s collection of printed textiles is inspired by her childhood spent in Africa, particularly the traditional, vivid African fabrics. She creates her initial drawings by using pen and ink and then develops these using a multitude of different techniques, to produce printed designs that can be used for fashion fabrics, interiors and wallpaper.
