Pottery meets Pewter

ten4-01This year we’re celebrating the 10th anniversary of our Graduate Solo Exhibition Award, an annual prize awarded to a Manchester Metropolitan University graduate who shows exceptional talent and potential. The Award supports designer-makers in the challenging period between graduation and setting up their creative business, and includes a year of bespoke professional development support from our team as well as a solo exhibition.

Our 10th winner’s exhibition, Behind Closed Doors: Ceramics by Verity Howard, runs from 25 Feb to 29 May 2016, and we’ve programmed 10 celebratory events and activities to accompany the exhibition, including the commission of some very special work by Verity Howard and our very own Ella McIntosh of THIS IS PEWTER, Studio 10.

Pottery meets Pewter

Tin is traditionally used to symbolise the 10th Wedding Anniversary. Pewter consists of over 95% tin and has come to represent this special occasion, hence the reason Ella was chosen to take part in this special project.

Verity and Ella explored the various similarities and differences between their work inspirations and process (read about this on Ella’s blog), before settling on a way to guide the project along and tie it in nicely with the 10th Anniversary theme:

10 Objects (5 each)
10 Minutes per Object
10 x 10 x 10 cm per Object
then swap!

What will happen next? Watch this space for progress updates or follow Verity and Ella on Twitter.

The final collection of pieces will be unveiled on May 12th as part of Manchester After Hours, and will be available to see here at the Centre until May 29th.
