LOOM OF LIFE
A TALK WITH SHAMJI VANKAR
SATURDAY 26TH OCTOBER
LOOM OF LIFE: A talk with Master weaver Shamji Vankar, from West India
Join master weaver Shamji Vankar as he takes us through the history and evolution of handloom weaving from Kutch, Gujarat. Drawing on generations of tradition, Shamji will explore how weaving techniques and styles have shifted over time, focusing on the period before and after the 1970s. He will share stories behind these changes, using examples from his personal collection of heritage and contemporary textiles.
As part of the talk, Shamji will unveil Loom of Life, a new piece created by his family using undyed fine cotton. This textile art illustrates the intricate handloom processes, from loom preparation to weaving, while highlighting traditional motifs passed down through generations. All elements are crafted using natural colours, staying true to the timeless techniques of handloom weaving.
