The team here at MCDC have been spotting talent at regional and national graduate shows since 2011, and have been awarding exhibitions to graduates for over 10 years! We hand-pick makers who we think are the “ones to watch” in the world of contemporary craft & design, shown with a SPOTTED! sign awarded to the maker to display alongside their work. We then support, promote and publicise these superstar graduates here on our website for all to see and celebrate.
This year, our curator Kaylee awarded the solo exhibition to MeghanGraydon Darby, a Textiles in Practice student whose work caught our eyes and truly amazed us.
Meghan told us a bit more about her work:
When looking at the everyday there are many things we tend to overlook as part of our identity and culture. I am currently exploring elements from my past surroundings and identity as part of my primary inspiration, referring to the traits of the town where I’m originally from.
The work I’ve produced within the series ‘Peterlee Have Your Say’ reflects the concept in a contemporary and visual way. My work is often illustrative, playful and full of colour, which is an interesting contrast when introduced to a space. I specialise in working with shape and form, using a range of media. Currently I’ve been experimenting with the laser cutter/CNC Router to producing large-scale drawings/sculptures in wood. I have also been working with yarn and the tufting machine to draw with and produce textured rugs.
Meghan will be exhibiting here at Manchester Craft & Design Centre between February and May 2019.
