Evolution of the Soccer Ball 2014
Chungkong is a Netherlands-based graphic designer. His work strips subjects like cult movies, books and sports down to their bare bones and brings them to life in vibrant and playful ways.
The first official FIFA World Cup Ball was created by Adidas in 1970 and was made up of a series of leather hexagons, pentagons and triangles sewn together.
High-tech materials and designs have developed over time to ensure accurate and fast flight, softness and safety when heading, and balls are now made of rubber, polyurethane foam, polystyrene, knitted fabric, amongst other materials. From 1986 balls have referenced their host country’s culture, and have featured Aztec murals, French cockerels, and American space rockets. 2006 was the first ball to change the shape of it’s components, making it smoother and rounder and improving accuracy and control. This print by Chungkong follows the evolution of the balls between 1970 and 2014.
